sumptuous carved walnut settee<\/strong> with an angel head is an expressive piece of Louis XV style salon furniture \u2014 a two-seat canap\u00e9<\/em> with a wavy serpentine back and seat, crowned by a finely carved winged angel head at the centre of the crest. The armrests scroll into richly unfurled rocaille<\/em> volutes; the seat and back are upholstered in a red fern-pattern jacquard fabric with small bee motifs.<\/p>\n The carved walnut settee dates to around 1880\u20131910 and is made in the style Louis XV<\/em> tradition \u2014 with asymmetrical rocaille<\/em> carving, cabriole legs and a wavy silhouette. It is a typical Belle \u00c9poque piece of salon furniture, from a time when prosperous homes revived the lavish elegance of the eighteenth century. The winged angel-head motif at the centre of the crest is a direct reference to the decorative language of the rococo, where putti and cherubs symbolised love, innocence and heavenly beauty.<\/p>\n Belle \u00c9poque snapshot:<\/em> Sarah Bernhardt (Sarah Bernhardt) came into the salon after the performance, still with flowers in her arms. She did not sit down at once \u2014 she only touched her fingers to the carved wood at the top of the back, where something small and winged looked down, forever smiling. For a moment she remained standing, listening to the room recover its silence. Some objects know how to wait, she thought; they know that a person always returns to what greets them without words.<\/p>\n The frame is carved from walnut (noyer<\/em>), with hand-worked rocaille<\/em> scrolls, the angel head and acanthus details. The upholstery is a red fern-pattern jacquard fabric with cream ferns and small bee motifs, secured with decorative brass nails. There is no separate maker’s mark, which is usual for salon furniture of this type.<\/p>\n Louis XV style carved settees with figural carving are increasingly hard to find in good condition with their quality carving intact.
