Carved Settee with Angel Heads \u2014 Neo-Renaissance, Europe, circa 1870\u20131890<\/strong><\/h2>\n
This impressive solid walnut carved settee<\/strong> is adorned with exceptionally rich carving \u2014 winged griffins and dragons on the back, heads of angels and satyrs on the base, acanthus foliage and fluted legs \u2014 a vivid example of the Neo-Renaissance (Renaissance Revival)<\/strong> style. This carved settee<\/strong> with a yellow velvet seat is an outstanding work by a woodcarver, most likely of the second half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n
The settee belongs to the Neo-Renaissance (Renaissance Revival<\/em>) style that flourished in European furniture-making in the second half of the 19th century, reviving the decorative motifs of the Italian and Renaissance. The characteristic elements are vividly present: an openwork carved back with confronting winged griffins (chimerical creatures), central oval cartouche medallions, grotesque masks and cherub (putto) heads on the front of the base, as well as acanthus volutes and fluted, tapering legs. The walnut is left in a natural, oiled finish that brings out the grain and the deep plasticity of the carving. This is a genuine work of the woodcarver’s art \u2014 the depth of the figural carving and the precision of the detail point to a master of high standing, hand-carved by a woodcarver rather than turned out in series.<\/p>\n
Renaissance Revival snapshot:<\/em> Gabriele D’Annunzio (Gabriele D’Annunzio) entered the dim Trastevere salon and, still without removing his gloves, ran his fingertips along the top rail of the back. Beneath his touch the wood was cool and alive \u2014 one winged creature seemed to have frozen mid-movement, another gazed back with the smile of a grotesque mask, and somewhere lower, in shadow, a child’s face slept forever among acanthus leaves. Through the half-open shutters broke the gold of a Roman late afternoon, and for a moment this whole intricate, living form seemed to draw breath. The poet said nothing; he only understood that here some woodcarver had cut a whole world into the wood, one that went on living quietly even when the room stood empty.<\/p>\n
The settee is unsigned, as were most Neo-Renaissance carved pieces of this kind, made in specialised Italian, or Central European woodcarving workshops. The quality of the figural carving \u2014 the plasticity of the griffins’ wings, the expressiveness of the masks and angel heads \u2014 points unmistakably to a professional woodcarver’s hand rather than a serial product. A Neo-Renaissance carved settee of this scale and survival is rarely found, as its figural carving is both technically demanding and fragile, so that elements often broke off or were lost over time; here the decoration survives complete and well secured. The settee is both functional seating and a standalone work of carving art.<\/p>\n
The settee is a magnificent accent in a classical, dark academia<\/em>, Gothic or historical interior \u2014 a hall, library, study, dining room or hotel lobby \u2014 its deep walnut tone and dramatic figural carving lending immediate historical gravity, and it is an excellent object for representative spaces and photographic or film studios where an authentic period atmosphere is wanted, the yellow velvet forming a warm contrast to the dark wood, and it makes an impressive gift for a collector, lover of interior design or admirer of historical furniture; the velvet may, if desired, be reupholstered in a new fabric, the carved frame serving for generations to come. The settee is in good age-appropriate condition with a beautiful natural patina; the carved decoration survives complete and well secured, with natural surface wear and some old timber-movement cracks visible, and old, inactive insect channels in places (see photographs), while the yellow velvet covering is in good condition with a light patina of use. The structure is stable. The condition is fully reflected in the photographs.<\/p>\n
