chairs<\/strong> is a work of the <strong>Historicism<\/strong> era in <strong>walnut<\/strong>, where the Renaissance Revival language speaks through powerful, sculptural carving. At the top of each front leg a <strong>lion mask<\/strong> gazes outward \u2014 an expressive, hand-carved figure created by a skilled woodcarver, framed in acanthus foliage and finished with a ring motif. The upholstery is a warm <strong>golden-yellow velvet<\/strong>, outlined by a row of decorative bronzed nails. These <strong>carved chairs<\/strong> carry the heavy, architectural silhouette the period loved.<\/p>\n<p>Dimensions (each chair): height 90 cm, width 49 cm, seat depth 39 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The chairs belong to the <strong>second half of the 19th century<\/strong>, when <strong>Historicism<\/strong> flourished across Europe \u2014 an age that revived Renaissance and Baroque forms with reverence and grandeur. The Renaissance Revival favoured square, moulded legs, lion and mascaron motifs, and a curved H-stretcher that lends the chair the solemnity of a throne. As a pair, these <strong>carved chairs<\/strong> form a symmetrical, representative composition.<\/p>\n<p><em>Renaissance Revival snapshot:<\/em> the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (<em>Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux<\/em>) stepped back in his Paris workshop, brushed shavings from his thumb and pressed it against the freshly cut mane \u2014 the warmth of the wood still held the motion of the chisel. In the dim corner waited a form whose lion eyes had already begun to watch; he smiled, knowing that tomorrow it would gaze into another room, for decades, quiet and unyielding.<\/p>\n<p>The chairs are in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina to the wood; the velvet survives with age-appropriate wear. The condition is fully reflected in the photographs. Die Neorenaissance liebte die schwere, architektonische Silhouette: quadratische, profilierte Beine, L\u00f6wen- und Maskaronmotive sowie eine geschwungene H-Strebe, die dem Stuhl die Feierlichkeit eines Throns verleiht.
