It is an altar candlestick of the pricket<\/em> type \u2014 with a wide round dish and a central spike for securing a large church candle. The shaft is built on two rhythms: an upper fluted, feather-bundle-like section, and a brilliant barley-twist<\/strong> and pierced acanthus<\/strong> scrollwork at the centre and base that sets up a play of light and shadow in the metal. As a true brass pricket candlestick<\/strong>, it was made to catch and return candlelight.<\/p>\n The stand rests on a massive tripod with three cherub<\/strong> masks (angel faces) among acanthus volutes, raised on lion-paw feet \u2014 a typical Baroque motif uniting the heavenly and the earthly.
