It is made of massive, dark-patinated oak<\/strong> with a tall, sloping panelled chimney hood<\/strong> (hotte<\/em>), crowned by a moulded cornice and a dentil frieze. The opening is guarded by two imposing caryatids<\/strong> \u2014 female half-figures by a woodcarver<\/em>, passing above into capitals with Ionic volutes and below into the form of a term pilaster. It is a presentation piece, almost architectural in scale, that dominates any room, the very type of grand carved fireplace<\/strong> that anchored a great hall.<\/p>\n Height 2.26 m \u00b7 width 1.38 m \u00b7 depth 55 cm<\/p>\n The fireplace dates to the second half of the 19th century<\/strong>, when the Neo-Renaissance style<\/strong> (style Renaissance<\/em> \/ Henri II) flourished in Europe, reviving the forms of 16th-century Italian and French Renaissance \u2014 caryatids, volutes, cornices and architectural monumentality. Such wooden fireplaces with a chimney hood were the central elements of the grandest palaces, mansions and hunting halls, combining a practical function with presentation nobility. Unmarked, the quality of the modelling of the caryatids, the profiling of the cornice and the scale of the construction point to a good European cabinet and carving workshop working in the historicist tradition.<\/p>\n Renaissance-revival snapshot:<\/em> the architect Henri Labrouste (Henri Labrouste<\/em>) stepped back a few paces in the hall and raised his eyes to the chimney hood rising overhead. The morning light slid over the shoulders of the caryatids, and the dark oak seemed to breathe. He laid his hand on one of the figures \u2014 the wood was cool, but beneath his fingers he felt the marks left by the chisel, weeks of the carver’s labour. There was no fire in the room yet, but the fireplace already reigned over it like a throne hall.<\/p>\n Complete wooden fireplaces with their chimney hood and figural caryatids preserved are rare today, as the hoods are often lost and the figures damaged; surviving complete, this is an outstanding presentation example.
