This impressive, large-format hunting still life<\/strong> depicts a sumptuous arrangement of game and garden bounty \u2014 a wild duck drake with its characteristic dark head and greenish-yellow bill, lying on a white linen drape, beside a darker, smaller game bird, juicy clusters of grapes, a pineapple, a melon and a massive, gleaming copper cauldron. The work continues the great Flemish and French nature morte<\/em> tradition, in which a hunting still life of trophies and overflowing fruit speaks of a household’s abundance and the generosity of nature.<\/p>\n

Maker and signature of this hunting still life<\/strong><\/p>\n

The painting is oil on canvas in the realist hunting still life manner that flourished in Belgium and northern France from the late 19th century and continued into the first half of the 20th. Confident chiaroscuro and a rich, warm palette \u2014 a deep dark ground from which the duck’s white breast and the copper’s golden glow emerge \u2014 reveal a technically mature hand. The work is signed lower left<\/strong> (see photo), “G.” followed by a surname; in its present state the signature is not securely legible and the author is not firmly established. The style \u2014 deep warm dark tones, a luminous copper vessel with a strong light reflex, and the material, almost tactile texture of the game \u2014 points to the Belgian or northern French realist tradition, heir to the Antwerp and Brussels academies and the spirit of the 17th-century Flemish masters. No certificate of authenticity accompanies the piece, and we recommend the collector compare the signature in specialist databases (B\u00e9n\u00e9zit, askArt, KIK-IRPA for Belgium). A painting of this scale \u2014 over a metre and a half wide \u2014 is a rare survival, as such large hunting still life canvases were painted for grand dining rooms, hunting salons and lodges, and survive far less often than small cabinet pictures. Its dark, deep colouring and ornate gilt Baroque frame suit a classical, eclectic or haute bourgeoisie<\/em> interior, and the format makes it a ready centrepiece. It is an impressive gift for a hunter, a gourmand, a wine collector or a restaurateur.<\/p>\n

Beyond the windowpane, late autumn mist lay over the canal water, and somewhere below a carriage clattered over the wet cobbles. In the depth of the room, on the white linen, a smooth round metal surface and the bluish sheen of a bird’s wing suddenly glimmered in the candlelight, as though the coolness of the forest itself had slipped into the warm interior. His fingers brushed for a moment over the cold, heavy rim, and somewhere deep within he felt again that hush of a hunting morning, when the water is still a mirror and the mist hangs over the reeds. In that motionless plenty lived something of the departing year, which he so wished to hold a moment longer.<\/p>\n

Condition of this hunting still life<\/strong><\/p>\n

The painting is in good overall condition with a lively, warm patina. The ornate gilt wood and gesso Baroque frame carries acanthus-leaf and floral ornament, with normal age-wear and minor edge losses, and a fabric passe-partout band surrounds the canvas. The reverse shows a construction with two inner stretcher modules beneath the outer frame (see photo). The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.<\/p>\n

Das Werk setzt die gro\u00dfe fl\u00e4misch-franz\u00f6sische Tradition der nature morte<\/em> fort, in der Jagdtroph\u00e4en und \u00fcberquellendes Obst vom Wohlstand des Hauses und von der Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit der Natur erz\u00e4hlen.<\/p>\n

Das Gem\u00e4lde ist \u00d6l auf Leinwand in der realistischen Jagdstillleben-Manier, die in Belgien und Nordfrankreich im sp\u00e4ten 19. Jahrhundert aufbl\u00fchte und sich in die erste H\u00e4lfte des 20. Jahrhunderts fortsetzte. Sicheres Helldunkel (chiaroscuro<\/em>) und eine warme, satte Farbgebung \u2014 ein tiefer dunkler Grund, aus dem die wei\u00dfe Brust der Ente und der goldene Glanz des Kupfers hervortreten \u2014 verraten eine technisch reife Hand. Die Datierung verweist auf das sp\u00e4te 19. bis fr\u00fche 20. Jahrhundert<\/strong>. Das Werk ist unten links signiert<\/strong> (siehe Foto), \u201eG.” mit einem Nachnamen; im jetzigen Zustand ist die Signatur nicht sicher zu entziffern, und der Urheber ist nicht eindeutig bestimmt. Der Stil \u2014 tiefe warme Dunkelt\u00f6ne, ein leuchtendes Kupfergef\u00e4\u00df mit starkem Lichtreflex und die materielle, fast greifbare Textur des Wilds \u2014 verweist auf die belgische oder nordfranz\u00f6sische realistische Tradition, Erbin der Akademien von Antwerpen und Br\u00fcssel und des Geistes der fl\u00e4mischen Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts. Ein Echtheitszertifikat liegt nicht bei; dem Sammler empfehlen wir, die Signatur in Fachdatenbanken (B\u00e9n\u00e9zit, askArt, KIK-IRPA f\u00fcr Belgien) zu pr\u00fcfen. Ein Bild dieser Gr\u00f6\u00dfe \u2014 \u00fcber anderthalb Meter breit \u2014 ist eine seltene Erscheinung, denn solch gro\u00dfe Leinw\u00e4nde entstanden f\u00fcr herrschaftliche Speises\u00e4le, Jagdsalons und Jagdh\u00e4user. Momentaufnahme der Belle-\u00c9poque-Zeit:<\/em> Joris-Karl Huysmans (Joris-Karl Huysmans) legte die Feder nieder und trat im Halbdunkel seiner Br\u00fcsseler Wohnung vom Schreibtisch zur\u00fcck. Hinter der Fensterscheibe lag der sp\u00e4therbstliche Nebel \u00fcber dem Kanalwasser, und irgendwo unten klapperte eine Kutsche \u00fcber das nasse Kopfsteinpflaster. In der Tiefe des Raumes schimmerten auf dem wei\u00dfen Leinen im Kerzenlicht pl\u00f6tzlich eine glatte runde Metallfl\u00e4che und der bl\u00e4uliche Glanz eines Vogelfl\u00fcgels, als w\u00e4re die K\u00fchle des Waldes in den warmen Raum geschl\u00fcpft. Seine Finger glitten einen Augenblick \u00fcber den kalten, schweren Rand, und tief in sich sp\u00fcrte er wieder jene Stille des Jagdmorgens, wenn das Wasser noch ein Spiegel ist und der Nebel \u00fcber dem Schilf h\u00e4ngt. In dieser reglosen F\u00fclle lebte etwas vom scheidenden Jahr, das er so gern noch einen Augenblick l\u00e4nger festgehalten h\u00e4tte.<\/p>\n

Das Gem\u00e4lde ist in gutem Gesamtzustand mit lebendiger, warmer Patina. Der pr\u00e4chtige vergoldete Holz- und Stuckrahmen im Barockstil tr\u00e4gt Akanthusblatt- und Bl\u00fctenornament mit normalen Altersspuren und kleinen Randverlusten; eine textile Passepartout-Leiste umgibt die Leinwand. Le tableau est une huile sur toile dans la mani\u00e8re r\u00e9aliste de la nature morte de chasse qui s’\u00e9panouit en Belgique et dans le nord de la France \u00e0 la fin du XIX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle et se poursuit dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XX\u1d49. Un clair-obscur assur\u00e9 (chiaroscuro<\/em>) et une palette chaude et riche \u2014 un fond profond et sombre d’o\u00f9 \u00e9mergent la poitrine blanche du canard et l’\u00e9clat dor\u00e9 du cuivre \u2014 r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une main techniquement m\u00fbre. La datation renvoie \u00e0 la fin du XIX\u1d49 \u2013 premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XX\u1d49 si\u00e8cle<\/strong>. L’\u0153uvre est sign\u00e9e en bas \u00e0 gauche<\/strong> (voir photo), \u00ab G. \u00bb suivi d’un patronyme ; dans son \u00e9tat actuel, la signature n’est pas lisible avec certitude et l’auteur n’est pas \u00e9tabli de fa\u00e7on ferme. Le style \u2014 tons sombres chauds et profonds, un r\u00e9cipient de cuivre lumineux au fort reflet, et la texture mat\u00e9rielle, presque tactile, du gibier \u2014 renvoie \u00e0 la tradition r\u00e9aliste belge ou nord-fran\u00e7aise, h\u00e9riti\u00e8re des acad\u00e9mies d’Anvers et de Bruxelles et de l’esprit des ma\u00eetres flamands du XVII\u1d49 si\u00e8cle. Aucun certificat d’authenticit\u00e9 n’accompagne la pi\u00e8ce ; nous recommandons au collectionneur de comparer la signature dans les bases sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es (B\u00e9n\u00e9zit, askArt, KIK-IRPA pour la Belgique). Un tableau de cette dimension \u2014 plus d’un m\u00e8tre et demi de large \u2014 est une survivance rare, car de telles grandes toiles \u00e9taient peintes pour les salles \u00e0 manger d’apparat, les salons et pavillons de chasse. Sa coloration profonde et son riche cadre baroque dor\u00e9 conviennent \u00e0 un int\u00e9rieur classique, \u00e9clectique ou haute bourgeoisie<\/em>, et le format en fait un centre naturel de la pi\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n

Instantan\u00e9 de la Belle \u00c9poque :<\/em> Joris-Karl Huysmans (Joris-Karl Huysmans) posa sa plume et recula de son bureau dans la p\u00e9nombre de son appartement bruxellois. Derri\u00e8re la vitre, la brume de fin d’automne reposait sur l’eau du canal, et quelque part en bas une voiture cliquetait sur les pav\u00e9s mouill\u00e9s. Dans la profondeur de la pi\u00e8ce, sur le lin blanc, une surface m\u00e9tallique ronde et lisse et l’\u00e9clat bleut\u00e9 d’une aile d’oiseau brill\u00e8rent soudain \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de la bougie, comme si la fra\u00eecheur de la for\u00eat s’\u00e9tait gliss\u00e9e dans la pi\u00e8ce chaude. Ses doigts gliss\u00e8rent un instant sur le bord froid et lourd, et tout au fond de lui il retrouva ce silence d’un matin de chasse, quand l’eau est encore un miroir et que la brume flotte au-dessus des roseaux. Dans cette pl\u00e9nitude immobile vivait quelque chose de l’ann\u00e9e qui s’en va, qu’il aurait tant voulu retenir un instant de plus.<\/p>\n

Le tableau est en bon \u00e9tat g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, avec une patine vivante et chaude. Le riche cadre baroque en bois et stuc dor\u00e9 porte un ornement de feuilles d’acanthe et de fleurs, avec une usure normale due \u00e0 l’\u00e2ge et de petites pertes aux bords ; une bande de passe-partout en tissu entoure la toile. Le revers montre une construction \u00e0 deux modules de ch\u00e2ssis internes sous le cadre ext\u00e9rieur (voir photo). L’\u00e9tat de l’objet est enti\u00e8rement refl\u00e9t\u00e9 par les photographies.<\/p>\n
