This grandiose cabinet was made at the opening of the Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> \u2014 at the precise historical moment when the German Empire was proclaimed in 1871 and the new nation’s prosperous bourgeoisie began building their representational townhouses and villas with a determination to demonstrate their cultural and economic power to the world. In Germany this period is known as the Gr\u00fcnderzeit<\/em> \u2014 the “Founders’ Time” \u2014 and its furniture has a highly distinctive character: German Historicism<\/strong> with a strong Renaissance Revival<\/em> (Neorenaissance<\/em>) sensibility, massively proportioned, architectonically structured, and executed with enormous artistic self-confidence.<\/p>\n

The cabinet’s architecture is remarkable: the upper section is conceived as a temple portal<\/em> with a deep cornice<\/em>, rows of pilasters<\/em>, a dentil<\/em> frieze and volute<\/em> side consoles \u2014 a direct transposition of Renaissance architectural language into the language of furniture. The lower section, with its bowed bomb\u00e9<\/em> side units and the central panel composition of geometric cassettes<\/em> and floral appliqu\u00e9s, speaks of consummate cabinetmaking skill.
