This impressive long bistro table belongs to the material heritage of Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> Parisian caf\u00e9 and brasserie culture \u2014 the period approximately 1880\u20131910<\/strong> when France<\/strong> developed a tradition of public dining culture unrivalled anywhere in the world. The long bistro table \u2014 table de brasserie<\/em> or table de restaurant<\/em> \u2014 was characteristic of Parisian brasseries alsaciennes<\/em>, railway station dining rooms and the great boulevard caf\u00e9 halls, where strangers, newspaper readers, artists and politicians sat side by side at the same long table.<\/p>\n
The construction follows a two-base \u2014 deux pieds<\/em> \u2014 system, with two independent cast iron fonte<\/em> stems each supported on a three-branch ornamental base. This double-pedestal arrangement allowed comfortable seating along both long sides \u2014 a functional solution that simultaneously demonstrates the ornamental refinement of the iron foundry craftsmen: each stem decorated with acanthus<\/em> leaf and rocaille<\/em> reliefs, each foot terminating in a pronounced volute<\/em> and ball form.<\/p>\n
The tabletop \u2014 solid ch\u00eane<\/em> (oak) plank construction with a moulded edge \u2014 presents in warm honey-brown tones with the characteristic oak medullary ray<\/em> figure, giving the wood an almost textile-like elegance. The top is composed of two fields with slightly differing tonality \u2014 the authentic signature of hand-crafted rather than industrially stamped production.<\/p>\n
