This table represents the most ambitious genre of Historicism<\/strong> and Neo-Renaissance<\/strong> \u2014 the large dining table with a figural pedestal construction, produced by high-grade workshops in the second half of the 19th century for manor houses, city palazzi<\/em>, and aristocratic dining rooms. The \u00e9b\u00e9nis\u00e9<\/em> ebonising technique \u2014 in which oak is treated to an intensely dark, near-black tone with a high polish \u2014 was particularly prized in England<\/strong> and Germany<\/strong> during the 1860s\u20131880s, when Neo-Renaissance<\/strong> demanded drama and grandeur.<\/p>\n
The pedestal is exceptional: four griffin-like<\/strong> figural creatures \u2014 with bird heads and acanthus<\/em>-leaf wings \u2014 emerge from a central columnar shaft and terminate in massive lion’s paw<\/strong> feet on bronze castors. This compositional solution is a direct inheritance from Renaissance sgabello<\/em> tables and Baroque torch\u00e8re<\/em> traditions, reinterpreted by Historicism<\/strong> as its most iconic aesthetic declaration. The table edge with its continuous gadroon<\/em> moulding \u2014 in an egg-and-lance rhythm \u2014 completes the Neo-Renaissance vocabulary.<\/p>\n
Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> began in 1871, and in precisely that decade, hunting culture among the European aristocracy experienced a new florescence. Kaiser Wilhelm I regarded his annual hunts at Rominten Lodge as affairs of state \u2014 and it was in dining rooms exactly like this, with their black oak tables, antlered trophies on the walls, and candelabra casting pools of light, that this table was born and used. A hunting trophy above, a silver candelabra on the surface, and these griffins below \u2014 it was a complete worldview made furniture.<\/p>\n

The sculptural quality of the figural griffin-like legs \u2014 the anatomical detail of the bird heads with open beaks and relief feather motifs, the dynamic acanthus<\/em> leaf carving on the upper leg sections, the anatomical precision of the lion’s paw feet \u2014 points to a highly skilled carver working in a specialist German, Belgian, or English<\/strong> workshop. The \u00e9b\u00e9nis\u00e9<\/em> ebonised finish with high gloss corresponds to the highest-grade English or German cabinetmaking, where this technique was the primary language of representational furniture.
