This vase is pure, authentic Art Nouveau<\/strong> at its height \u2014 the era in which European decorative art returned to nature as its sole and ultimate source of beauty. Around 1895\u20131910, Paris, Nancy, Li\u00e8ge and Brussels competed to translate the flowering of plants, the flow of leaves and the rhythm of nature most soulfully onto glass, ceramics, metal and fabric.<\/p>\n
The form of this vase \u2014 with a flowing, swelling body that narrows at the waist and widens at the base \u2014 is an iconic Art Nouveau silhouette<\/strong> that no other era has replicated with the same conviction. The deep, lush green glass tone \u2014 almost the green of the plant world itself \u2014 is not an incidental colour choice. Art Nouveau used green as a symbol of nature’s presence within the object itself.<\/p>\n
The decoration applied to the surface combines three techniques in a single composition: white enamel<\/strong> forms the flower petals with a relief-like plasticity; gold outline<\/strong> traces the stems, leaves and buds with the elegance of precise graphic line; and turquoise enamel dots<\/strong> at the flower centres provide vitality and a colour accent. This vase was made in the French or Belgian Art Nouveau glass tradition<\/strong> \u2014 stylistically closest to houses such as Legras & Cie<\/strong> (Saint-Denis, France) or Montjoye<\/strong> \u2014 manufactories that specialised precisely in green glass vases with gold enamel decoration and supplied the finest Parisian shops, including Bon March\u00e9 and the luxury galleries of Boulevard Haussmann.<\/p>\n
Legras & Cie in this period was one of the most active exporters of Art Nouveau glass to Britain, Belgium and Scandinavia. Their vases in green glass with enamel floral motifs are found today in private collections and museums in Paris, London and Brussels.
