with their finely carved crests, are a magnificent example of French <strong>Rococo Revival<\/strong> salon furniture, in the <strong>Louis Philippe \/ Napoleon III<\/strong> style (c. Rococo chairs of this kind, with an oval medallion back and a richly carved crest of flowers and scrolls, were an essential part of the elegant mid-nineteenth-century salon. The set comprises two chairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>The Rococo Chairs \u2014 Style and Craftsmanship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The chairs were made in France in the mid-nineteenth century, around <strong>1850\u20131870<\/strong>, in the spirit of the <strong>Rococo Revival<\/strong> (<em>style Rocaille<\/em>, Louis Philippe and early Napoleon III), which revived the light, curving line and naturalistic motifs of eighteenth-century Rococo. The frames are made of a dark, strongly striped-grain wood \u2014 most likely <strong>rosewood<\/strong> (<em>palisandre<\/em>) or a hardwood stained to imitate rosewood. The oval medallion back and the serpentine seat rail are crowned by rich sculptural carving \u2014 a central rocaille shell framed by symmetrical scrolls, roses, buds, and acanthus leaves. The chairs stand on gracefully curved cabriole legs. No visible maker&#8217;s stamp appears in the photographs, as is consistent with most salon furniture of the period, so we make no forced attribution. A matched pair of rococo chairs with carving of this quality and their original form preserved is increasingly hard to find. A pair made at the same time, with matching finish, is more valuable than separately acquired chairs. These chairs make an elegant accent in a classical or eclectic modern interior \u2014 as salon, bedroom, dressing-table, or statement accent chairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><em>Belle \u00c9poque snapshot:<\/em> Pauline Viardot (Pauline Viardot) walked into her Parisian music salon and sat down at the piano, still holding a sheet of music. A late spring afternoon poured through the window, and somewhere down in the street carriage wheels rattled quietly over the cobbles. Against the wall, in half-shadow, a dark wooden form rose slenderly \u2014 an oval crowned by richly intertwined patterns of carved flowers and scrolls, almost like a frozen moment of a garden. Her fingers drifted absently across the cool, smooth carved crest, feeling beneath their tips every petal the carver&#8217;s chisel had drawn from the hard wood. In this graceful, singing form lived the whole spirit of the salons of that age \u2014 music, conversation, and beauty flowing into one another like a single melody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The chairs are in good, age-appropriate condition. The wooden frames are stable, with a beautiful natural patina; minor signs of age are visible in places \u2014 small scratches, wear, and natural seams in the wood (see the upper back in the photographs), typical of furniture over a century old. The carved details are well preserved. The upholstery is green velvet with decorative passementerie trim, well preserved, with natural wear to the velvet and patina visible in places. In dieser anmutigen, singenden Form wohnte der ganze Geist der Salons jener Epoche \u2014 Musik, Gespr\u00e4ch und Sch\u00f6nheit, die ineinander flossen wie eine einzige Melodie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Die St\u00fchle sind in gutem, altersgem\u00e4\u00dfem Zustand. Les b\u00e2tis en bois sont solides, dot\u00e9s d&#8217;une belle patine naturelle ; quelques petites traces du temps sont visibles par endroits \u2014 fines rayures, usures et joints naturels du bois (voir le haut du dossier sur les photographies), typiques d&#8217;un mobilier de plus d&#8217;un si\u00e8cle. Les d\u00e9tails sculpt\u00e9s sont bien conserv\u00e9s. La garniture est en velours vert avec galon de passementerie d\u00e9coratif, bien conserv\u00e9e, avec une usure naturelle du velours et une patine visibles par endroits.
