This romantic pair of needlepoint chairs<\/strong> is a work of the Rococo Revival<\/strong> in walnut<\/strong>, where the light, undulating grace of the 18th century returns. The shaped cartouche<\/em> back is crowned by rocaille carving<\/strong> with volutes and flowers \u2014 fine work by a woodcarver. The upholstery is a handmade needlepoint tapestry<\/strong> with a full bouquet of roses on a cream ground, framed by rocaille garlands and outlined by a row of decorative bronzed nails; the graceful cabriole legs<\/strong> complete the light, mobile silhouette. As a pair, these needlepoint chairs<\/strong> form a symmetrical, romantic salon composition.<\/p>\n

The chairs were made in the second half of the 19th century<\/strong>, when Rococo Revival<\/strong> flourished across Europe \u2014 a return to the undulating, asymmetrical forms of the Louis XV era. The style is marked by cabriole legs, cartouche backs, rocaille volutes, and floral motifs \u2014 all in movement, all flowing. Tapestry upholstery with rose bouquets was a favourite of bourgeois salons, turning a seat into a soft, garden-like composition.<\/p>\n

Rococo Revival snapshot:<\/em> in a painter’s studio beside a floral still life, a lady rose from the chair and lingered a moment, stroking the top of the back \u2014 the warmth of the woollen yarn beneath her fingers, the pattern of roses almost alive in the evening candle. Behind the curtain a spring rain murmured. The form she had risen from still held her warmth, and she smiled, for it seemed that even the flowers in the fabric had turned their heads to follow her.<\/p>\n

The chairs are in good, stable antique condition with a natural patina to the wood; the needlepoint upholstery survives with age-appropriate wear. The condition is fully reflected in the photographs. Momentaufnahme des Neorokoko:<\/em> im Atelier eines Malers, neben einem Blumenstillleben, erhob sich eine Dame vom Stuhl und verweilte einen Augenblick, indem sie den oberen Rand der Lehne streichelte \u2014 die W\u00e4rme des Wollgarns unter den Fingern, das Rosenmuster im Abendkerzenlicht beinahe lebendig. Hinter dem Vorhang rauschte ein Fr\u00fchlingsregen. Die Form, von der sie sich erhoben hatte, bewahrte noch ihre W\u00e4rme, und sie l\u00e4chelte, denn es schien, als h\u00e4tten selbst die Blumen im Stoff ihr die K\u00f6pfe nachgewandt.<\/p>\n

Die St\u00fchle sind in gutem, stabilem antikem Zustand mit nat\u00fcrlicher Patina; der Gobelinbezug ist mit altersgem\u00e4\u00dfer Abnutzung erhalten. Cette romantique paire de chaises<\/strong> est une \u0153uvre du n\u00e9o-rococo<\/strong> (renouveau rococo) en noyer<\/strong>, o\u00f9 revient la gr\u00e2ce l\u00e9g\u00e8re et ondulante du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle. Le dossier en cartouche<\/em> galb\u00e9 est couronn\u00e9 d’une sculpture rocaille<\/strong> \u00e0 volutes et fleurs \u2014 travail fin d’un sculpteur sur bois. La garniture est une tapisserie au point<\/strong> (needlepoint<\/em>) faite main, orn\u00e9e d’un riche bouquet de roses sur fond cr\u00e8me, encadr\u00e9e de guirlandes rocaille et soulign\u00e9e d’une rang\u00e9e de clous bronz\u00e9s d\u00e9coratifs ; les gracieux pieds cabriole<\/strong> ach\u00e8vent la silhouette l\u00e9g\u00e8re et mobile.<\/p>\n
