An elegantly sculptural wall console in solid oak with exceptionally deep and precise hand carving \u2014 one of the finest examples of Historicist<\/strong> menuiserie<\/em> reinterpreting the spirit of Louis XV<\/strong> with a free and confident hand. Four graceful cabriole<\/em> legs with a pronounced S-curve terminate in delicate scrolled volute<\/em> feet. The apron features a richly three-dimensional open rocaille<\/em> composition: a central cartouche of leaves and shells, flanked by freely flowing acanthus<\/em> and volutes<\/em>. Above, a diamond-pattern treillis<\/em> frieze with a pearl-bead border. The carving throughout is of extraordinary depth \u2014 not a flat relief but a genuinely sculptural achievement.<\/p>\n

The top is a slab of natural marble in warm golden ochre with horizontal grey-brown veining reminiscent of flowing travertine \u2014 a tone characteristic of southern French or Italian quarries of the jaune de Sienne<\/em> or giallo reale<\/em> family.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 Louis XV period snapshot:<\/em> In Lyon, in the autumn of 1878, a cabinetmaker named Henri Aug\u00e9 had just finished a new console for a textile merchant from Rouen. He placed a single candle on the marble top, stepped back three paces, and tilted his head slightly to study the shadows across the frieze. The piece was complete. But Aug\u00e9 lingered, his eyes fixed on the central leaf of the cartouche \u2014 as though waiting for it to stir.<\/p>\n

Maker and marks.<\/strong> No maker’s mark is visible in the photographs. The quality of the carving \u2014 its depth, freedom, and anatomical precision \u2014 points to an accomplished cabinetmaker working in the French provinces or Paris during the height of the Historicist revival (1860\u20131890). Une console murale d’une \u00e9l\u00e9gance sculpturale en ch\u00eane massif, orn\u00e9e d’une sculpture \u00e0 la main d’une profondeur et d’une pr\u00e9cision exceptionnelles \u2014 l’un des plus beaux exemples de menuiserie<\/em> historiciste r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tant l’esprit du Louis XV<\/strong> avec une main libre et assur\u00e9e. Quatre pieds cabriole<\/em> gracieux \u00e0 galbe prononc\u00e9 se terminent par de d\u00e9l\u00e9gants pieds en volutes<\/em>. La ceinture pr\u00e9sente une riche composition ouverte en rocaille<\/em> tridimensionnelle : un cartouche central de feuilles et de coquilles, encadr\u00e9 de feuilles d’acanthe<\/em> et de volutes<\/em> librement model\u00e9es.
