An exceptionally refined oval writing table (table de milieu<\/em>) in bois de rose<\/em> and fruitwood veneer with a sunburst (rayonnant<\/em>) pattern and a central mother-of-pearl accent \u2014 one of the most elegant and visually rich examples of Napoleon III<\/strong> cabinetmaking, uniting the freedom of Louis XV<\/strong> rococo with the technical ambition of its own era. The serpentine<\/em> contour of the top \u2014 undulating, with pronounced concave turns \u2014 is executed with mathematical precision; all veneer grain directions flow outward from the centre like sunrays, converging at a circle of mother-of-pearl inlay. Such an effect demands a master hand and many hours of work.<\/p>\n

The table edge is encircled by a broad ormolu<\/em> bronze border with an oeuf-et-dard<\/em> \u2014 egg-and-dart \u2014 frieze, one of the oldest and most beloved ornamental motifs of Roman classicism. The apron carries a single drawer with a bronze gadroon border. The central frieze mascaron<\/em> \u2014 a bearded male face in a laurel wreath surrounded by acanthus garlands \u2014 is identifiable as Neptune<\/strong> or Bacchus<\/strong>, two beloved motifs of the Napoleon III<\/strong> decorative programme. The four cabriole<\/em> legs are fitted with massive bronze herm\u00e8s<\/em> figures \u2014 female faces with diadems above a torso from which leaf garlands descend.
