A refined walnut writing table with an exceptionally rich sculptural programme \u2014 one of the most expressive examples of Historicist<\/strong> menuiserie<\/em>, reinterpreting the monumental spirit of Baroque \/ Louis XIV<\/strong> with a free and assured hand. Four massive barley twist<\/em> legs \u2014 spiralling turned columns \u2014 are each cut from a single piece of solid walnut and terminate in broad turned ball bases resting on small rosette elements. The legs are united by a low entretoise<\/em> stretcher \u2014 also in barley twist<\/em> form \u2014 with a central turned element at the crossing point. The overall effect is almost architectural: the table reads as a small temple held aloft by four twisted pillars.<\/p>\n

The frieze carries two drawers with round wooden knobs and a bronze keyhole escutcheon. At each corner, precisely where the frieze meets the legs \u2014 four hand-carved angel<\/strong> (putti<\/em>) heads with curling hair, half-closed eyes, and delicate facial expression. Each head is individual \u2014 not a production piece but a cabinetmaker’s personal work. The top is solid walnut with a beautiful natural grain, deepened by aged patina.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 Baroque era snapshot:<\/em> Brussels, winter of 1887. The artist F\u00e9licien Rops (F\u00e9licien Rops)<\/em> sat down at his table late in the evening. The candlelight fell across a corner \u2014 and one of the angels in the shadow seemed to have turned. Rops did not notice. Or perhaps he did, but never wrote of it.<\/p>\n

Maker and marks.<\/strong> No maker’s mark is visible in the photographs. The precision of the barley twist<\/em> turning, the depth of the putti<\/em> head carving, and the quality of the walnut timber point to a high-class Belgian or French cabinetmaking atelier working at the height of the Historicist<\/strong> period. Tables of this type with putti<\/em> heads were produced for an exclusive market \u2014 collectors, aristocrats, and the highest haute bourgeoisie<\/em> households.<\/p>\n

Rarity and significance.<\/strong> Writing tables with barley twist<\/em> legs and hand-carved putti<\/em> heads at the corners are exceptionally rare on the antiques market. The putti<\/em> motif combined with barley twist<\/em> is the most iconic compositional element of the Baroque and Louis XIV traditions \u2014 and here it is executed with sculptural conviction.<\/p>\n

Interior and photographic use.<\/strong> The table suits a Baroque, Neo-Renaissance, or eclectic interior \u2014 as a writing desk in a study or as a centrepiece in a drawing room or library. Its visual complexity makes it an outstanding prop for fashion, jewellery, and art photography. Very heavy \u2014 at least two people required for transport.<\/p>\n

Condition.<\/strong> Solid walnut in good overall condition with natural aged patina. Barley twist legs intact. Putti heads show detailed carving without significant damage. Drawers function. The condition of the item is fully reflected in the photographs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ein raffinierter Schreibtisch aus massivem Walnussholz mit einem au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlich reichen skulpturalen Programm \u2014 eines der ausdrucksst\u00e4rksten Beispiele historistischer menuiserie<\/em>, die den monumentalen Geist des Barock \/ Louis XIV<\/strong> mit freier und \u00fcberzeugter Hand interpretiert. Vier massive Barley-Twist<\/em>-Beine \u2014 spiralf\u00f6rmige gedrechselte S\u00e4ulen \u2014 sind jeweils aus einem einzigen St\u00fcck massivem Walnussholz geschnitten und enden in breiten gedrechselten Kugelbasen auf kleinen Rosettenelementern. Die Beine sind durch eine niedrige Entretoise<\/em> \u2014 ebenfalls in Barley-Twist<\/em>-Form \u2014 mit einem zentralen gedrechselten Element am Kreuzungspunkt verbunden.<\/p>\n

Der Fries tr\u00e4gt zwei Schubladen mit runden Holzkn\u00f6pfen und einer Bronzeschl\u00fcssellochrosette. An jeder Ecke, genau dort, wo der Fries auf die Beine trifft \u2014 vier handgeschnitzte Engel<\/strong>-(Putti<\/em>)-K\u00f6pfe mit lockigem Haar, halbgeschlossenen Augen und delikatem Gesichtsausdruck. Jeder Kopf ist individuell \u2014 keine Serienarbeit, sondern pers\u00f6nliche Arbeit eines Tischlers.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea Momentaufnahme der Barockzeit:<\/em> Br\u00fcssel, Winter 1887. Der K\u00fcnstler F\u00e9licien Rops (F\u00e9licien Rops)<\/em> setzte sich sp\u00e4t abends an seinen Tisch. Das Kerzenlicht fiel auf eine Ecke \u2014 und einer der Engel schien sich im Schatten umgedreht zu haben. Rops bemerkte es nicht. Oder doch, aber er schrieb nie dar\u00fcber.<\/p>\n

Hersteller und Marken.<\/strong> Kein Herstellerstempel erkennbar. Die Pr\u00e4zision der Barley-Twist<\/em>-Drechslung, die Tiefe der Putti<\/em>-Kopfschnitzerei und die Qualit\u00e4t des Walnussholzes weisen auf eine belgische oder franz\u00f6sische Spitzenwerkstatt der Historismus<\/strong>-Hochphase hin.<\/p>\n

Seltenheit und Bedeutung.<\/strong> Schreibtische mit Barley-Twist<\/em>-Beinen und handgeschnitzten Putti<\/em>-K\u00f6pfen an den Ecken sind auf dem Antiquit\u00e4tenmarkt au\u00dferordentlich selten.<\/p>\n

Verwendung in Interieur und Fotografie.<\/strong> Der Tisch eignet sich f\u00fcr ein Barock-, Neorenaissance- oder eklektisches Interieur. Sehr schwer \u2014 mindestens zwei Personen f\u00fcr den Transport erforderlich.<\/p>\n

Une raffin\u00e9e table de travail en noyer massif avec un programme sculptural exceptionnellement riche \u2014 l’un des exemples les plus expressifs de menuiserie<\/em> historiciste, r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tant l’esprit monumental du Baroque \/ Louis XIV<\/strong> avec une main libre et assur\u00e9e. Quatre pieds massifs barley twist<\/em> \u2014 colonnes torsad\u00e9es tourn\u00e9es \u2014 sont chacun taill\u00e9s dans une seule pi\u00e8ce de noyer massif et se terminent par de larges bases sph\u00e9riques tourn\u00e9es reposant sur de petits \u00e9l\u00e9ments en rosette.
