A monumental wall console in solid mahogany with richly cast ormolu<\/em> bronze mounts \u2014 one of the most commanding expressions of Empire<\/strong> style decorative furniture. Four elegantly curved sabre<\/em>-form legs, each crowned with a fluted torch-shaped bronze capital and terminating in bold gilded lion’s paw<\/em> feet (patte de lion<\/em>), support a wide and generously deep top. A serpentine stretcher base with gilded edge moulding completes the lower structure. The central frieze bears a cast bronze appliqu\u00e9 of interlaced palmette<\/em> leaves and blossoms \u2014 an unmistakable motif of the Napoleonic era.<\/p>\n

The top is a single slab of natural marble: grey-violet in tone with striking amber and rust-coloured veining. This marble, with its geological drama and surface depth, reads as an independent work of art.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 Empire period snapshot:<\/em> In Saint Petersburg, during the winter of 1836, the architect Carlo Rossi had nearly completed the refurbishment of the Mikhailovsky Theatre fa\u00e7ade. In the evenings he would walk the newly finished rooms by candlelight \u2014 not to inspect the work, but to feel how the light fell across the bronze and marble. At one of the consoles he stopped, set the candle on the surface, and stood motionless for a while. Then he picked up the candle and left.<\/p>\n

Maker and marks.<\/strong> No maker’s mark is visible in the photographs. The quality of construction, precision of the bronze mounts, and mahogany workmanship indicate a professional cabinetmaking atelier working within the Empire<\/strong> tradition. Consoles of this type were produced in Paris, Brussels, and Saint Petersburg workshops as representative furnishings for reception rooms and entrance halls of prosperous households.<\/p>\n

Rarity and significance.<\/strong> Wall consoles in this size category \u2014 over 200 cm in length \u2014 are exceptionally rare on the antiques market. Vier elegant geschwungene Beine in Sabre<\/em>-Form, gekr\u00f6nt von massivsn gerippten Fackelkapitellen aus Bronze und endend in kraftvollen vergoldeten L\u00f6wenpranken<\/em> (patte de lion<\/em>), tragen eine breite und tiefe Deckplatte. Ein geschwungener Sockelsockel mit vergoldeter Kantenleiste schlie\u00dft die Konstruktion nach unten ab. Die Tischplatte besteht aus einer einzigen Naturmarmorplatte: grau-violett mit markanten bernstein- und rostfarbenen \u00c4derungen. Dieser Marmor, geologisch ausdrucksstark und von tiefer Oberfl\u00e4chenstruktur, ist ein eigenst\u00e4ndiges Kunstwerk.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea Momentaufnahme der Empire-Zeit:<\/em> In Sankt Petersburg, im Winter 1836, hatte der Architekt Carlo Rossi die Umgestaltung der Fassade des Michailowski-Theaters fast abgeschlossen. Die Ausf\u00fchrungsqualit\u00e4t, die Pr\u00e4zision der Bronzebeschl\u00e4ge und die Mahagonibearbeitung weisen auf eine professionelle Tischlerwerkstatt hin, die in der Empire<\/strong>-Tradition arbeitete. Konsolen dieses Typs wurden in Pariser, Br\u00fcsseler und Petersburger Werkst\u00e4tten als repr\u00e4sentative Ausstattungsst\u00fccke f\u00fcr Salons und Empfangshallen gefertigt.<\/p>\n

Une console murale monumentale en acajou massif avec de riches appliques en bronze ormolu<\/em> \u2014 l’une des expressions les plus imposantes de l’art d\u00e9coratif Empire<\/strong>. Quatre pieds \u00e9l\u00e9gamment galb\u00e9s en forme de sabre<\/em>, surmont\u00e9s de massifs chapiteaux torch\u00e8res cannel\u00e9s en bronze et se terminant par de puissantes pattes de lion<\/em> dor\u00e9es, soutiennent un plateau large et profond. Un entretoise ondul\u00e9e avec une moulure dor\u00e9e compl\u00e8te la structure inf\u00e9rieure.
