This console belongs to the most distinguished examples of the Neo-Rococo<\/strong> style within the Historicism<\/strong> era \u2014 a tradition of grand furniture that in the second half of the 19th century<\/strong> reflected the European upper classes’ desire to recreate the palace splendour of the Louis XV<\/strong> and Louis XVI<\/strong> periods. The black finish \u2014 in an almost \u00e9b\u00e8ne<\/em> or ebony tone \u2014 lends this console a dramatic, nearly theatrical character that sets it apart from ordinary wood consoles and brings it close to the stylistic world of grand palais<\/em> and opera house foyers.<\/p>\n

The frieze of the console is among the most richly carved examples possible in this style: a central coquille<\/em> shell motif with sweeping acanthus<\/em> leaf branches, a treillis<\/em> diamond lattice background on either side, and rose and leaf reliefs \u2014 all carved with exceptional plasticity and depth. The entretoise<\/em> \u2014 the lower connecting element between the legs \u2014 is equally fully ornamented with a symmetrical coquille<\/em> and volute<\/em> composition. The marble top \u2014 white with grey veining, likely Carrara<\/strong> or Bardiglio<\/strong> type \u2014 provides an ideal contrast to the dark carved frame.<\/p>\n
