Dutch Baroque<\/strong> is one of the most refined furniture traditions in Europe: originating in the Netherlands<\/strong> in the 17th century, it developed the bomb\u00e9<\/em> form \u2014 the swelling, artillery-shell silhouette of the lower corpus \u2014 combined with rich burr walnut<\/em> veneering and powerful carved crowns that became the hallmark of this style across the continent.<\/p>\n
In the second half of the 19th century, Historicism<\/strong> revived this tradition with fresh momentum \u2014 in Germany<\/strong>, the Netherlands<\/strong>, Belgium<\/strong>, and the Baltic region<\/strong>, grand urban townhouses were being built and filled with representative furniture. Cabinets such as this one \u2014 with a bomb\u00e9<\/em> chest below, glazed vitrine above, and a carved acanthus<\/em>\/rocaille<\/em> crown \u2014 belonged to the confident representative style of the most prosperous bourgeois dining rooms and studies.<\/p>\n
This piece belongs to that fertile stylistic moment when Historicism<\/strong> in its late phase still held the assured gravitational pull of Baroque form, yet already began to add the elegance in details characteristic of Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> joie de vivre \u2014 the lion’s paw feet, rocaille<\/em> mounts, and carved cartouche<\/em> with leaf scrollwork are symptomatic of this transitional period.<\/p>\n
