This sculpture depicts Hebe<\/strong> \u2014 the ancient Greek goddess of youth, spring and vitality, daughter of Zeus and Hera, who served as cupbearer to the gods of Olympus, offering nectar and ambrosia to the immortals. The figure is dressed in a Greek peplos with characteristic belt gathering and peplos apoptygma (overfold), a Greek fillet around the head, and holds in her hands a flat kylix (drinking cup) and a small amphora-type vessel. This is the classical iconography that refers directly to the celebrated sculptural tradition of Antonio Canova (1757\u20131822)<\/strong>, who produced several versions of Hebe between 1796 and 1817, making her one of the most iconic figures of neoclassicism across the whole of Europe. The present example is a late 19th or early 20th century academic reproduction in that tradition \u2014 produced as an accessible plaster copy for aristocratic and bourgeois interiors.<\/p>\n

Clearly impressed on the rim of the figure’s lower base are the initials and number: B.S. 56<\/strong>. Such a designation \u2014 initials combined with a model or catalogue number \u2014 is characteristic of the European artistic plaster production tradition, in which sculptors’ workshops registered their models with internal catalogue numbers. The most probable interpretation is that B.S.<\/strong> represents the initials of the maker or sculptor (likely an Italian or French workshop), while 56<\/strong> denotes the model or mould number. During the second half of the 19th century and into the early 20th, countless plaster sculpture workshops operated across Italy \u2014 particularly in Florence, Rome and Milan \u2014 exporting reproductions of classical themes throughout Europe. Stamped examples such as this are more valuable than unstamped ones, as they attest to organised production and an identified origin. The black lacquered wooden base is likely a later addition, characteristic of the first quarter of the 20th century, when sculptures were frequently presented on contrasting display plinths.<\/p>\n
