This monumental chest is a distinguished example of the Neo-Renaissance<\/strong> style within the Historicism<\/strong> era \u2014 a period in which 19th-century<\/strong> European craftsmen returned with enthusiasm to the Italian Renaissance cassone<\/em> tradition, reproducing the forms of 15th and 16th-century<\/strong> Florentine and Venetian marriage chests with all the precision of industrial-age craftsmanship. The cassone<\/em> \u2014 the Italian Renaissance marriage chest \u2014 was one of the most significant pieces of furniture in aristocratic and haute-bourgeois households, its carvings narrating mythological and historical scenes.<\/p>\n
The central panel composition of the fa\u00e7ade is of exceptional artistic quality: two symmetrical putti<\/em> \u2014 nude child figures bearing shields and trophy garlands \u2014 flank a central cartouche<\/em> with a helmet, armour and laurel branch troph\u00e9e d’armes<\/em> composition. Diese monumentale Truhe ist ein herausragendes Beispiel des Neo-Renaissance<\/strong>-Stils der Historismus<\/strong>-\u00c4ra, das die Tradition des italienischen Cassone<\/em> \u2014 der Hochzeitsteuhe des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts<\/strong> aus Florenz und Venedig \u2014 mit der handwerklichen Pr\u00e4zision des Industriezeitalters reproduziert. Die zentrale Komposition der Fassade zeigt zwei symmetrische Putti<\/em> \u2014 nackte Kinderfiguren mit Schilden und Troph\u00e4engirlanden \u2014 flankierend ein zentrales Cartouche<\/em> mit Helm, R\u00fcstung und Lorbeerzweig im Sinne der troph\u00e9e d’armes<\/em>. Die Seitenpanele sind mit Rosetten<\/em> und Pilastern<\/em> geschm\u00fcckt. Die oberen und unteren Friese tragen Egg-and-dart<\/em>– und Bead-and-reel<\/em>-Profile. Der Deckel ist mit einer Needlepoint<\/em>-Stickerei in Rot, Gr\u00fcn und Gold mit floralem Arabeskenornament bezogen und mit vergoldeten Messingn\u00e4geln befestigt.<\/p>\n
Im Jahr 1869 wurden die neuen Villen des Parioli<\/strong>-Viertels in Rom mit genau solchen Cassone<\/em>-Truhen eingerichtet \u2014 Neo-Renaissance war nicht nur eine Mode, sondern Ausdruck nationaler Identit\u00e4t im vereinten Italien.
