This monumental solid oak map chest is a distinguished example of the Neo-Gothic<\/strong> style within the Historicism<\/strong> era \u2014 a period in which 19th-century Europe enthusiastically returned to the forms of medieval cathedrals, and craftsmen competed in reproducing Gothic lancet<\/em> arches, columns and capital systems in solid wood. Pieces of this type were used in architects’, cartographers’ and artists’ studios for storing large drawings, maps and project sheets \u2014 hence the English designation map chest<\/em> or drawing file cabinet<\/em>.<\/p>\n
The five fa\u00e7ade lancet<\/em> arches \u2014 with sharp Gothic points and trefoil<\/em> ornaments at their crowns \u2014 recall the tracery of cathedral windows. Each arch rests on tower-like columns with individually carved acanthus<\/em> and leaf capitals. The octagonal column bases \u2014 plinthes<\/em> \u2014 lend the lower section architectural stability and a finished quality. The lid, fitted with two wrought iron hinges bearing fleur-de-lis<\/em> ornament, is among the most distinctive details of the piece, confirming that this is not merely a storage chest but an artistic object in its own right. The interior features unlacquered solid oak boards with a natural patina.<\/p>\n
This chest is dateable to approximately 1860\u20131900<\/strong> and belongs fully to the Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> \u2014 1871 to 1914<\/strong> \u2014 when architects and engineers were engaged in realising Europe’s greatest construction projects.<\/p>\n

Monumentale Kartentruhe aus massiver Eiche zur Aufbewahrung von Karten, Zeichnungen und gro\u00dfformatigen Bl\u00e4ttern \u2014 ein seltenes Beispiel des neugotischen<\/strong> Stils der Historismus<\/strong>-\u00c4ra. Die f\u00fcnf Lanzettb\u00f6gen<\/em> der Fassade mit einzeln geschnitzten S\u00e4ulenkapitellen reproduzieren die Architektur mittelalterlicher Kathedralen. Die schmiedeeisernen Scharniere mit Fleur-de-lis<\/em>-Ornament sind original und in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Innen: unlackierte Eichenholzbretter mit nat\u00fcrlicher Patina. Herkunft: vermutlich Frankreich<\/strong>, Belgien<\/strong> oder England<\/strong>, circa 1860\u20131900<\/strong>. Zustand gut, mit nat\u00fcrlichen Altersspuren.
