Carved Wood Pedestal Stand in Louis XVI Style<\/strong><\/p>\n

This elegant small carved wood pedestal<\/strong> is a column-stand executed in the restrained, harmonious vocabulary of the Louis XVI<\/strong> style. Despite its small size, the piece carries a full sense of neoclassical proportion: a round, moulded top is supported by a slender fluted<\/strong> tapering shaft, caught at the centre by a fine carved<\/strong> band of laurel and acanthus foliage. This carved wood pedestal<\/strong> descends into a turned square socle and a massive, stepped circular base that lends it stability and seriousness.<\/p>\n

The wood is a warm, dark reddish-brown walnut or mahogany<\/strong> with a deep, dense graining; the surface patina speaks of decades of careful use. The carved band is the work of a woodcarver’s hand \u2014 not mechanical, but plastic and alive.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 Louis XVI snapshot:<\/strong> In the late afternoon Madame Vig\u00e9e Le Brun (\u00c9lisabeth Vig\u00e9e Le Brun<\/em>) was looking, in her studio, for a place to set a small bronze bust she had just finished. Her eye came to rest on a slender dark form by the window, where a ray of sun slid along the fluted shaft and for a moment set the band of foliage alight as if in gold. She lifted the bronze, set it on top \u2014 and stepped back to look. Just so: the thing held the bronze as though it had always stood there. She smiled and returned to her easel.<\/p>\n

The stand dates to the late 19th \u2013 early 20th century, the era of the Louis XVI<\/strong> revival. It is an ideal small pedestal for a little sculpture, a bronze, a porcelain figure or a vase \u2014 on a table, shelf or commode, or as an accent against a wall. Its small size lets it slip easily into any interior. Condition is good and consistent with age; the wood has a natural patina and graining. The condition is fully reflected in the photographs.<\/p>\n

Kleine geschnitzte S\u00e4ule-Postament \u2014 im Louis-XVI-Stil<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eine elegante kleine S\u00e4ule-Postament aus Holz, ausgef\u00fchrt in der zur\u00fcckhaltenden, harmonischen Sprache des Louis-XVI<\/strong>-Stils. Trotz der geringen Ma\u00dfe tr\u00e4gt das St\u00fcck das volle Gef\u00fchl klassizistischer Proportion in sich: Eine runde, profilierte Deckfl\u00e4che wird von einem schlanken kannelierten<\/strong> konischen Schaft getragen, der in der Mitte von einem feinen geschnitzten<\/strong> Band aus Lorbeer- und Akanthuslaub gefasst wird. Unten geht der Schaft in einen gedrechselten quadratischen Sockel und einen massiven, gestuft profilierten runden Fu\u00df \u00fcber, der dem St\u00fcck Standfestigkeit und Ernst verleiht.<\/p>\n

Das Holz ist ein warmes, dunkel rotbraunes Nussbaum oder Mahagoni<\/strong> mit tiefer, dichter Maserung; die Patina der Oberfl\u00e4che zeugt von jahrzehntelangem, behutsamem Gebrauch. Das geschnitzte Band ist das Werk einer Holzbildhauerhand \u2014 nicht mechanisch, sondern plastisch und lebendig.<\/p>\n

Es ist ein ideales kleines Postament f\u00fcr eine kleine Skulptur, eine Bronze, eine Porzellanfigur oder eine Vase \u2014 auf einem Tisch, Regal oder einer Kommode oder als Akzent an der Wand. Une \u00e9l\u00e9gante petite colonne-pi\u00e9destal en bois, ex\u00e9cut\u00e9e dans le vocabulaire sobre et harmonieux du style Louis XVI<\/strong>. Malgr\u00e9 ses petites dimensions, la pi\u00e8ce porte tout le sens de la proportion n\u00e9oclassique : un plateau rond et moulur\u00e9 est soutenu par un f\u00fbt conique \u00e9lanc\u00e9 et cannel\u00e9<\/strong>, saisi en son centre par une fine bande sculpt\u00e9e<\/strong> de feuillage de laurier et d’acanthe. En bas, le f\u00fbt se prolonge en un socle carr\u00e9 tourn\u00e9 et une base ronde massive, moulur\u00e9e en gradins, qui lui conf\u00e8re stabilit\u00e9 et gravit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Le bois est un noyer ou acajou<\/strong> chaud, brun rouge\u00e2tre fonc\u00e9, au veinage profond et dense ; la patine de la surface t\u00e9moigne de d\u00e9cennies d’usage soigneux. La bande sculpt\u00e9e est l’\u0153uvre d’une main de sculpteur sur bois \u2014 non m\u00e9canique, mais plastique et vivante.<\/p>\n

Son regard s’arr\u00eata sur une forme sombre et \u00e9lanc\u00e9e pr\u00e8s de la fen\u00eatre, o\u00f9 un rayon de soleil glissait le long du f\u00fbt cannel\u00e9 et embrasait un instant la bande de feuillage comme de l’or. Elle souleva le bronze, le posa au sommet \u2014 et recula d’un pas pour regarder. Ainsi : la chose portait le bronze comme s’il avait toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u00e0. Elle sourit et retourna \u00e0 son chevalet.<\/p>\n
