This exceptional piece was made during the Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> \u2014 that era of artistic abundance between 1871 and 1914, when European cabinetmakers and wood-carvers rose to a new height of craft pride. Stylistically the cabinet belongs to the Historicist<\/strong> tradition with a strong Louis XV<\/strong> (Louis Quinze<\/em>) rocaille<\/em> sensibility \u2014 the double oval frames with their moulded profiles and the lower acanthus<\/em> bud composition are classic examples of the 18th-century Versailles ornamental repertoire revived in the second half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n
What makes this piece exceptional, however, is the central putto<\/em> figure \u2014 a winged child-angel seated between the two oval frames with a remarkably expressive, slightly dreaming face. This level of sculptural quality \u2014 rounded forms, detailed feathers, natural proportions \u2014 points to a skilled master working in ronde-bosse<\/em> (full three-dimensional volume), not flat relief. Wall cabinets of this type with sculpted putti<\/em> were popular in private entrance halls and salon interiors as holders for keys or calling cards, combining a practical function with a strong decorative statement.<\/p>\n
Belle \u00c9poque snapshot:<\/em> In 1880 Auguste Rodin received the commission for the monumental “Gates of Hell” \u2014 and began his first studies of putti<\/em> and child figures that would later become the foundation of his plastic language. In precisely these years, hand-carved putto<\/em> sculptures were experiencing a new flowering in Parisian workshops: every distinguished cabinetmaker wanted his angel. This is one of them.<\/p>\n
